What Happens Inside a Hyperbaric Chamber During Your First Session?

Understand the five stages of a chamber session, from entry and pressurization to stable operation, depressurization and exit.

Entering the Chamber: Understand the Layout and Communication System

Before entering, read the equipment instructions, check which items are permitted inside and learn how to use the internal controls and communication system. Seated models accommodate an upright position, while lying models provide space to recline.

Once comfortably positioned, fit the oxygen-delivery equipment as instructed and confirm that you can communicate with the person outside. For example, the OxySail YF-1002 product information lists a two-way intercom for communication between the inside and outside of the chamber.

Gradual Pressurization: Why Might Your Ears Feel Pressure?

After the checks are complete and the door is closed, the equipment gradually increases chamber pressure according to its settings. You may hear airflow or equipment operating sounds. Some users may also notice fullness in their ears or a faint popping sound.

As the surrounding pressure changes, the middle ear needs to equalize pressure through the Eustachian tubes. A study of middle-ear pressure regulation in a hyperbaric chamber recorded pressure-equalization events and associated sounds during compression and decompression.

Before your first session, learn the pressure-equalization methods specified in the equipment instructions. If you experience pain or persistent discomfort, promptly contact the person outside and follow the operating instructions rather than trying to endure it.

Stable Operation: Does the Air Keep Circulating?

Once the selected pressure is reached, the equipment enters its stable operating stage. Stable pressure does not mean that the air inside stops moving.

For example, the OxySail YF-1001 product information describes a ventilation system that brings air in while exhausting air, working alongside pressure regulation to maintain the operating environment. Chamber air renewal and oxygen delivery are separate functions that should be understood individually.

During this stage, you can rest quietly in ways permitted by the equipment instructions. Reading, listening to music or using other features must follow those instructions; personal electronic devices should not automatically be assumed to be allowed inside. Body support, ventilation, temperature and operating sounds can all affect the experience.

Gradual Depressurization: Can You Open the Door When the Timer Ends?

After the stable operating stage, chamber pressure must gradually return to the surrounding atmospheric pressure according to the operating procedure. You may hear exhaust airflow and notice pressure changes in your ears again.

The end of the timer does not mean the door can be opened immediately. Wait until depressurization is complete, the pressure inside and outside has equalized, and the equipment procedure confirms that the door can be opened. Do not operate valves yourself to speed up depressurization.

Exiting the Chamber: How Much Time Should You Allow?

When planning a session, allow time for preparation, pressurization, depressurization and exiting, as well as the stable operating stage. Control programs can differ between equipment models, so operating arrangements should not be copied directly from another model.

After exiting, share any observations about ear pressure, temperature or communication with the person responsible for operating the equipment. Pressure settings, duration and operating steps should follow the instructions for the equipment being used. During a first session, focus on understanding what happens at each stage and how to communicate promptly when assistance is needed.
